PCM and Wegener to link dailies in a new newspaper concept
PCM Uitgevers and Koninklijke Wegener announce that they will initiate a serious study with the intention of arriving at a joint venture for their respective daily newspaper publishing companies in the provinces of South Holland and Utrecht. This will involve the daily newspapers of PCM’s General Media Group Division (Algemeen Dagblad, Rotterdams Dagblad, De Dordtenaar and Rijn en Gouwe) and the dailies published by Wegener’s Utrechts Nieuwsblad | Haagsche Courant publishing company (Haagsche Courant, Goudsche Courant, Utrechts Nieuwsblad, Amersfoortse Courant). Joint circulation is currently around 630,000 copies per day.
The idea is to combine these titles into a new newspaper concept: a metropolitan daily with a clear focus on the key regions (Rotterdam, The Hague, Dordrecht, Utrecht and the green heartland bounded by these cities, as well as Amersfoort). Additionally, Algemeen Dagblad will continue to be distributed on a nationwide basis.
By joining forces in this way and thus expanding their investment strength for innovation, the publishers believe they will be able to make a strong newspaper product, one that can build up and reinforce its market position better than is presently the case.
This new concept – which will include a multimedia approach – can better serve readers in this part of the large urban area in the western Netherlands, and can put a stop to the steady decline in subscriptions. The present state, one of fragmentation of positions, is not the solution.
The study is expected to result in a concrete business plan for the joint venture at the end of the first quarter of 2005.
